Wednesdays

These hikes are strictly fitness oriented.  They are held every Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. in Kanawha State Forest.  Meet at the swimming pool parking area. Groups are arranged according to fitness levels.

  • The advanced group hikes at a very brisk pace through moderate to difficult level trails.  Sometimes this group will jog on parts of the trails.  These hikes range from 5-7 miles and last from 1-2 hours.  Courses are planned in advance of each hike and led by group leaders.  Currently, Kelly McGraw is the advanced group leader.
  • The Intermediate group hikes at a moderate pace through moderate to difficult level trails.  These hikes also range from 5-7 miles and 1-2 hour's duration.  The main difference between the intermediate and advanced level is the pace.
  • The level 1 group (we dislike the connotation often associated with "beginners") hikes at a stroll to moderate pace through less challenging to moderate level trails.  These hikes range from 1-5 miles and last from 1-2 hours.

All times and distances are approximate and vary from week to week as well as group to group.  The groups were established to afford everyone the opportunity to experience fitness according to their own abilities and goals.  We have had members ranging in age from 16 to 55 with various different fitness levels.  I have personally hiked in all 3 groups for varying reasons (other than as group leader).  You will not be "assigned" to a group level.  As KC Trailblazers assumes no liability or responsibility for its participants/members, it is your responsibility to determine an appropriate fitness level.  We do recommend as with any exercise program that you consult your physician before participation and/or to address any questions or concerns.

Essentials:  water and good shoes

*Water.  Some people do and some people don't, bring water that is.  While there are no requirements for hiking, I highly recommend that you bring water.  You may in fact not "need" water but it has been my experience that about 99% of members "want" water on these hikes.  Members, who did not bring water on their 1st hike, did bring it on the next.  Recommendations here depend on your personal preference and budget.  A plastic, bottled water from the vending machine will do just fine, of course you'll have to tote it.  There are many carrier types available that range in price and style. Personally, I would take whatever you already have along on the 1 st hike and then decide what will meet your personal needs.

*For shoes my personal recommendation (please remember, I am not a shoe expert!) is ankle support.  These trails have varied terrain and anyone can turn an ankle whether strolling or jogging, whether level 1 or advanced.  Comfort would be my second recommendation.  The best way to make a decision is to go hiking first in some comparable shoes you already own (sneakers, cross-trainers, hiking boots, etc…).  Once you have been you will have a better idea of which group(s) you will be participating in and what type of shoe/boot will work best for you.  If you still can't decide then ask a group member to help you or rely on the shoe salespeople (the, hopefully, experts).
